Artist Statement

Catharsis AS Artist Statement:

Hi I’m Johnnie Xel, a gender-queer artist playing with all the colors.

Some of the things I do:

• Write poetry
• Performance/spoken word poet
• Shoot photos
• Make video
• Paint
• Cook

Performance As Catharsis

I cut my teeth doing performance art on the streets of Tucson, Arizona. My Mentor George taught me how cathartic this could be. Every time I performed I felt something transform inside myself.  Every time I spoke my truth I experienced this phenomenon Catharsis. It truly cleansed my spirit and set me free to further explore the power of Spoken word.

The Magic of Storytelling

I continue with the simple definition of Catharsis as my Artist Statement. As a Storyteller it is humbling to witness the effect my words have on an audience.
